Standards & Criteria

The assessment of written communication at George Mason is done by discipline. With the help and guidance of the Writing Assessment Group (WAG), comprised of a team of faculty from across the University, each academic discipline creates its own rubric for assessing good writing, establishes acceptable standards, scores samples of written work from juniors and seniors, and prepares a report on the outcomes. Writing assessment is conducted on a cyclical basis with approximately five to seven new units coming up every year. WAG is in the process of documenting changes that have occurred since formal writing assessment began at Mason in 2001.
